About the Project: Urban farming in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur is an initiative of Rotary Club of Kampung Baru City Centre with partners; Rotary Club of Kampung Gelam (D3310), Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja D3300 and Yayasan Kelab Kelab Rotary Malaysia.
The main objective is to: Promote urban farming so as to reduce malnutrition and food insecurity. Through this project, we engage with the community, provide skill-building techniques, provide skills on making and marketing home food products, and utilise idle vacant land. Various methods of agriculture were taught, for example, fertigation, the building of raised beds from used pallets, planting using old tyres, composting, rain harvest etc.
Our volunteers are made up of the residents of Kampung Baru, street boys, like-minded friends and fellow Rotarians. We have had more than 50 volunteers. In 3 months, we have harvested 30kg of chillies and many fruit trees and herbs have been planted.
From the knowledge shared and training given to the community, the community will be able to teach the younger generation what was taught to them example, how to do fertigation, aquaponic and build a hydroponic system to plant salads etc. they can cultivate oyster mushroom for their own consumption. Ability to sell their products in a presentable manner. Knowledge on the plants to grow for attracting the bees for honey collection.
